Owens Corning (Toledo, Ohio) announced June 23 that it has licensed its trademarked Twintex reinforcement technology to Fiber Glass Industries Inc. (Amsterdam, N.Y.). Twintex commingles glass fibers with (typically) spun polypropylene filaments in several forms for composite reinforcement. The proprietary thermoplastic/glass fiber technology is designed to produce reinforcements with superior mechanical properties, particularly in regard to stiffness-to-weight ratio and impact resistance.

Under the license, Fiber Glass Industries will use Twintex technology to produce GLASS POLYPRO commingled roving and fabrics.  “This will allow for continuity of supply in the U.S. for commingled glass and thermoplastic roving products, and also allow us to work with our customers to develop new applications for the products,” says Tom Bruce, director of sales and marketing at Fiber Glass Industries. Production, he reports, will begin in September of this year. Until then, customers’ material needs will be met by Owens Corning.

Twintex was recently honored at the JEC Composites Show in Paris, for its use in window lineals. The breakthrough technology, using Twintex commingled glass fiber and polymer reinforcement, eliminated the need for steel inserts to strengthen the vinyl parts.
